Moderation 중용 / A Huge Lump of Gold 거대한 황금 덩어리

옛날 옛날에, 부유한 마을이 있었습니다. 마을 사람들 중에 가장 부자가, 산적과 도둑들로부터 지키기 위해 커다란 황금 덩어리를 숨겨두기로 결심했습니다. 그래서 그는 그것을 논 가까이에 묻었습니다.

여러 해가 지난 후, 마을은 더 이상 부유하지 않았으며, 그 논도 버려지고 쓰이지 않았습니다. 한 가난한 농부가 들판을 갈아 일구기로 맘을 먹었습니다. 한동안 밭을 일구다가, 그의 쟁기가 오랫동안 잊혀진 묻혀 있던 보물을 우연히 건드리게 되었습니다. 처음에 농부는 그것이 아주 딱딱한 나무뿌리라고 생각했습니다. 그러나 흙을 걷어 내고서 그는 그것이 아름다운 황금이라는 것을 알았습니다. 대낮이었으므로, 그는 그것을 가지고 가는 것이 두려웠습니다. 그래서 그는 다시 흙으로 덮어 놓고 밤을 기다렸습니다.

가난한 농부는 한밤중에 돌아왔습니다. 농부는 다시 황금 보물을 덮고 있던 흙을 걷어 냈습니다. 그는 황금 덩어리를 들어 올리려고 했지만 너무 무거웠습니다. 그는 황금 덩어리 둘레를 밧줄로 묶어서 끌어 보려고 했습니다. 그러나 그것이 너무 커서 한 치도 옮길 수 없었습니다. 농부는 운이 좋아서 보물을 발견했는데, 그것을 가지고 갈 수가 없는 것은 운이 나쁜 것이라고 생각하면서 실망을 했습니다. 그는 거대한 황금 덩어리를 발로 차기까지 했습니다. 그러나 역시 황금 덩어리는 한 치도 움직이지 않았습니다!

그래서 농부는 앉아서 상황을 생각해 보기 시작했습니다. 그는 황금 덩어리를 네 개의 작은 덩어리로 쪼개는 것이 유일한 방법이라고 결론을 내렸습니다. 그러면 한 번에 한 개씩 집으로 가지고 갈 수가 있을 테니까요.

농부는 생각했습니다. '한 덩어리는 살아가는 데 써야겠다. 두 번째 덩어리는 우기를 대비해 저축해 둬야겠다. 세 번째 덩어리는 농사짓는 데 투자해야겠다. 그리고 네 번째 덩어리는 불쌍하고 가난한 사람들에게 나누어 주고 다른 좋은 일에 써서 공덕을 지어야겠다.'

농부는 침착한 마음으로 거대한 황금 덩어리를 네 개의 작은 덩어리로 나누었습니다. 그리고 네 번 왔다 갔다 하며 황금 덩어리들을 집으로 쉽게 옮겼습니다. 그 후에 그는 행복하게 살았습니다.

Once upon a time, there was a rich village. The wealthiest of the villagers decided to hide a huge lump of gold to protect it from bandits and robbers. So he buried it in a nearby rice field.

Many years later, the village was no longer rich, and the rice field was abandoned and unused. A poor farmer decided to plow the field. After some time plowing, it just so happened that his plow struck the long-forgotten buried treasure. At first he thought it must be a very hard tree root. But when he uncovered it, he saw that it was beautiful shining gold. Since it was daytime he was afraid to try and take it with him. So he covered it up again and waited for nightfall.

The poor farmer returned in the middle of the night. Again he uncovered the golden treasure. He tried to lift it, but it was far too heavy. He tied ropes around it and tried to drag it. But it was so huge that he couldn't budge it an inch. He became frustrated, thinking he was lucky to find a treasure, and unlucky to not be able to take it with him. He even tried kicking the huge lump of gold. But again it wouldn't budge an inch!

Then he sat down and began to consider the situation. He decided the only thing to do was to break the lump of gold into four smaller lumps. Then he could carry home one piece at a time.

He thought, 'One lump I will use for ordinary day-to-day living. The second lump I will save for a rainy day. The third lump I will invest in my farming business. And I will gain merit with the fourth lump by giving it to the poor and needy and for other good works.'

With a calm mind he divided the huge lump of gold into these four smaller lumps. Then it was easy to carry them home on four separate trips. Afterwards he lived happily.

Excess 지나침 / Two Ways of Beating a Drum 북을 치는 두 가지 방법옛날 옛날에, 시골 작은 마을에 북 연주자가 살고 있었습니다. 그는 베나레스 시에서 축제가 있을 거라는 소식을 들었습니다. 그래서 그는 그곳으로 가서 북을 연주해 돈을 벌기로 결심했습니다. 그는 두 대의 북을 위해서 작곡된 음악을 연주하려고 아들을 데리고 함께 가기로 했습니다.

북 연주자 아버지와 아들은 베나레스 축제에 갔습니다. 그들은 꽤 성공했습니다. 누구나 그들의 북 연주를 좋아했고, 그들에게 후하게 돈을 주었습니다. 축제가 끝나고 그들은 작은 마을의 집으로 돌아오는 여행을 시작했습니다. 가는 길에 그들은 어두운 숲을 지나야 했습니다. 그곳은 여행자들을 약탈하는 노상강도들 때문에 아주 위험했습니다.

북 연주자 소년은 강도로부터 자신과 아버지를 지키고 싶었습니다. 그래서 소년은 멈추지 않고, 할 수 있는 한 크게 북을 두드렸습니다. '클수록 더 좋지!'라고 소년은 생각했습니다.

북 연주자 아버지는 아들을 옆에 데리고 있었습니다. 그는 큰 무리들이 지나갈 때, 특히 왕실 행렬일 때 북을 치는 습관이 있다고 아들에게 설명했습니다. 그들은 아주 위엄 있는 태도로, 마치 아무도 무서워하지 않는 것처럼, 규칙적인 간격을 두고 북을 쳤습니다. 그들은 북을 둥둥 두드리다가, 조용히 있다가, 다시 세게 두드리는 식으로 연주를 했습니다. 아버지는 아들에게 그렇게 해서 노상강도들이 세력 있는 군주가 지나간다고 생각하도록 속이라고 말했습니다. 그러나 소년은 아버지의 충고를 무시했습니다. 소년은 자기가 가장 잘 안다고 생각했습니다. '클수록 더 좋지!'라고 그는 생각했습니다.

한동안 노상강도 패들은 소년의 북치는 소리를 들었습니다. 처음에 그들은 엄중한 호위대를 거느린 부유하고 세력 있는 남자가 오고 있다고 생각했습니다. 그러나 노상강도들은 멈추지 않고 마구잡이로 계속 치는 북소리를 들었습니다. 그들은 가만있는 커다란 개한테 놀란 작은 개가 짖는 것처럼 미친 듯이 날뛰는 북소리라는 것을 알았습니다.

그래서 그들은 정찰을 나갔고, 아버지와 아들뿐이라는 것을 발견했습니다. 그들은 부자를 때려눕히고, 그들이 힘들게 번 돈을 약탈해 숲으로 도망가 버렸습니다.

Once upon a time, there was a drummer living in a small country village. He heard there was going to be a fair in the city of Benares. So he decided to go there and earn some money by playing his drums. He took his son along to accompany him when playing music written for two drums.

The two drummers, father and son, went to the Benares Fair. They were very successful. Everyone liked their drum playing and gave generously to them. When the fair was over they began the trip home to their little village. On the way they had to go through a dark forest. It was very dangerous because of muggers who robbed the travelers.

The drummer boy wanted to protect his father and himself from the muggers. So he beat his drums as loudly as he could, without stopping. 'The more noise, the better!' he thought.

The drummer man took his son aside. He explained to him that when large groups passed by, especially royal processions, they were in the habit of beating drums. They did this at regular intervals, in a very dignified manner, as if they feared no one. They would beat a drum roll, remain silent, then beat again with a flourish, and so on. He told his son to do likewise, to fool the muggers into thinking there was a powerful lord passing by. But the boy ignored his father's advise. He thought he knew best. 'The more noise, the better!' he thought.

Meanwhile, a gang of muggers heard the boy's drumming. At first they thought it must be a powerful rich man approaching, with heavy security. But then they heard the drumming continue in a wild fashion without stopping. They realized that it sounded frantic, like a frightened little dog barking at a calm big dog.

So they went to investigate and found only the father and son. They beat them up, robbed all their hard-earned money, and escaped into the forest.

Thinking Ability 생각하는 힘 / A Wife and Mother Who Was a Sister First 아내와 엄마이기보다 먼저 누이동생인 여인옛날에 산적들이 한 마을을 약탈했습니다. 그리고 그들은 울창한 숲으로 도망갔습니다. 마을의 몇몇 남자들이 산적들을 쫓아갔습니다. 마을 남자들은 숲을 포위하고 산적들을 찾았으나, 그들을 발견할 수가 없었습니다.

숲에서 나온 마을 남자들은 들판에서 밭을 갈고 있는 세 명의 농부를 보았습니다. 그들은 즉시 그들을 붙잡고 말했습니다. "아하! 너희 산적들이 밭을 갈고 있는 순진한 농부로 가장하고 있구나! 도둑놈들아, 우리와 함께 임금님에게로 가자!" 마을 남자들은 그들을 묶어서 죄수로 왕에게 끌고 갔습니다. 왕은 그들을 궁전의 지하 감옥에 가두었습니다.

그 일이 있은 후 한 여인이 궁전 안마당으로 들어오기 시작했습니다. 며칠 동안 그녀는 마치 상을 당한 듯이 울었습니다. 어느 날, 왕이 그녀의 울음소리를 듣고 안으로 들어오라고 했습니다. 왕은 그녀에게 왜 울고 있느냐고 물었습니다. 그 여인이 말했습니다. "저는 제 남편과 아들, 그리고 오빠가 모두 당신의 죄수가 되었다고 들었습니다, 임금님."

왕은 그 세 남자를 지하 감옥에서 데리고 왔습니다. 너그러운 통치자였으므로, 왕은 여인에게 말했습니다. "나는 너에게 세 명 중 한 명을 주겠다. 누구를 선택하겠는가?"

여인이 물었습니다. "임금님, 그 셋을 모두 저에게 주실 수는 없습니까?" 왕이 대답했습니다. "아니, 그럴 수는 없다." 주의 깊게 생각한 후에 그녀가 말했습니다. "세 사람을 모두 주실 수 없다면 제 오빠를 주십시오, 임금님."

왕은 그 여인의 선택에 놀랐습니다. 그는 말했습니다. "너는 남편이나 아들을 택해야 한다. 왜 그 대신에 오빠를 원하는가?"

영리한 여인은 대답했습니다. "임금님, 제가 길거리로 나가면 새 남편은 쉽게 구할 수가 있을 겁니다. 그러면 다른 아들도 쉽게 가질 수가 있겠지요. 남편이나 아들은 이 세상에서 쉽게 얻습니다. 그러나 부모님이 돌아가셨기 때문에 오빠는 다시 얻을 수가 없답니다!"

왕은 이 꾸밈없는 여인이 보여준 지성과 생각하는 능력에 감명을 받았습니다. 그의 재상들 중 몇몇은 그만큼 똑똑하지 못했습니다. 그래서 그는 그 여인에게 상을 주기로 했습니다. 왕은 말했습니다. "너에게 오빠, 남편, 아들 셋 다 주마."

Once upon a time, some bandits robbed a village. Then they escaped into a thick forest. Some men from the village chased them. They surrounded the forest and searched it for the robbers, but they could not find them.

When they came out of the forest they saw three farmers plowing in their field. They immediately captured them and said, "Aha! You bandits are pretending to be innocent farmers interested only in plowing! Come with us to the king, you thieves!" They tied them up and took them as prisoners to the king. He locked them in the palace dungeon.

Then a woman began coming to the palace courtyard. For several days she came and cried, as if in mourning. One day, the king heard her cries and asked her to come inside. He asked why she was crying. She said, "I have heard that my husband, son and brother are all your prisoners, my lord."
